If the cabinets and counters are sound, the backsplash is the single highest-return change you can make to a kitchen. It is a small area, it sits at eye level, and it is the surface people actually look at while they are standing in the room.
What installs quickly
Ceramic and porcelain subway tile, handmade-look zellige, stacked stone and slab offcuts matched to the counter all go in fast. The variable is not the tile, it is the preparation: removing the old splash cleanly, making the wall flat, and cutting around outlets and switches so the result looks deliberate.
What slows a job down
Full-height slab, intricate mosaic and anything that needs electrical outlets moved will add days. So will a wall that turns out not to be flat once the old tile is off, which on older Tampa Bay homes is more common than not.
Most backsplash jobs we take on are done inside three days, including grout cure time.
